The Business of Employment: 5 Things to Think about for Your "Dream Job"

By Gregory John "G.J." Vitale on September 24, 2012

1. Find a career path that will have work.

There are countless experts who say they know which careers are going up, and which ones are coming down. The fact of the matter is that research can only take us so far. Regardless, if you are worried about finding work after graduation, concentrate on fields that will always be needed by the public. So many advances in technology and the rise in population are shrinking the opportunities out there, so act fast too.

2. Do something that makes you happy, or is at least interesting to you.

This is a no-brainer and at the top of every career adviser’s go-to list. In fairness, it is great advice and is universal. No matter the field you find yourself wanting to get into, you must have some sort of passion for it, or else your career becomes a job, and a job is just a way to make money, bringing no passion or joy to your life.

3. Don’t throw all your eggs in one basket.

Try to get a well-rounded education in college. Take courses outside your comfort zone and expand your skill set. Who knows? Maybe at some point you’ll even switch majors or career paths. The point is that things like programming in C++ or college-level writing are just plain  useful talents to attain.

4. Strive for excellence in your field.

This goes hand-in-hand with #2. When your projects become too hard for the everyday worker, you become excited at the challenge ahead. Being apathetic about your life’s work doesn’t foster positive energy and serves only to limit you.

5. Get to know the people you should get to know.

Ever heard the phrase It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know? Of course you have. In the job market, knowing a big shot could make or break an opportunity of a lifetime, or at least an opportunity that could lead to an opportunity of a lifetime. Ask around. Be kind of annoying. Introduce yourself to those who study the same things you do. Be aggressive out there, because no one is going to just hand you a lucrative career.
