8 Unofficial March Holidays To Celebrate

By Elana Goodwin on March 2, 2015

You may think the only holiday March has is St. Patrick’s Day — but there’s actually a bunch of unofficial March holidays worth celebrating this month.

So here are some days to mark on your calendar to help break up March’s monotony and get you enjoying the long month before spring begins.

1. National Peanut Butter Lovers’ Day, March 1. The first day of the month is a day worth marking if you love peanut butter. Whether you like the classic smooth variety, the chunky kind, or just natural peanut butter, today’s the day to eat your heart out and celebrate this unofficial March holiday.

Have a peanut butter sandwich, slather some on celery or apple slices, nosh on some Reese’s or peanut butter M&Ms, or dip some pretzels or crackers into a jar.

(Did you miss this holiday? Go ahead and celebrate it today–we won’t tell!)

2. I Want You To Be Happy Day, March 3. Celebrate this day by doing something nice for others — buy someone a coffee, post a funny video on a friend’s timeline, give someone a compliment, or call your mom and tell her how much you appreciate her.

Look at this unofficial March holiday as an opportunity to do something to make someone else happy and brighten their day.

3. Day of Unplugging, March 6. This day started as one to help Jewish people reconnect with keeping Sabbath and is observed from sundown March 6 to sundown March 7 but has spread and been adopted by people of all backgrounds.

It’s a day to live offline, to turn off your cell phones, computers, tablets, and other electronics and spend the day living in the real world and connecting with actual people.

So mark your calendars to celebrate this unofficial March holiday and take the day to spend some time with yourself, or with friends and family, and with your eyes and ears tuned in and your technology turned off.

4. Napping Day, March 9. This is a holiday I think we can all get behind, especially since we turn the clocks ahead an hour for Daylight Saving Time on March 8. Which means we’re all going to need a nap to help us adjust to the time change on March 9, and also just because we’re college students and are perpetually exhausted.

So get into your pajamas and climb back into bed, grab a blanket and curl up on the couch, or just claim a study carrel at the library and put your head down and catch some z’s. Because this unofficial March holiday just might be the best day of the year, and it’s a day worth sleeping away.

5. National Pi Day, March 14. The mathematical symbol Pi is used to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14, which is why it’s celebrated on 3/14.

To celebrate and commemorate this day, you could of course do some math — but I think a more enjoyable and better way to celebrate this March holiday is instead to eat some Pi(e) — with an “e.”

6. National Chip and Dip Day, March 23. Chip and dip has become a classic American party snack food but even if you’re not planning to have a party to celebrate this unofficial March holiday, it’s still an easy and yummy one to observe!

Grab a bag of chips and a container of hummus or guacamole or make some homemade dip yourself to partake in this great day.

7. International Waffle Day, March 25. This holiday originated in Sweden but I think it’s one we all can enjoy celebrating because who doesn’t like waffles?

Whether you choose to eat them for breakfast, as a snack, or for “brinner,” celebrate this unofficial March holiday by eating waffles — even if they’re just the frozen kind.

8. Take A Walk In The Park Day, March 30. As the month comes to an end, and hopefully the weather takes a turn for the better, celebrate this unofficial March holiday by taking a walk in the park.

Go out and enjoy the fresh air and maybe some sunshine. Grab a friend, your dog, your earbuds, or just yourself, and take a walk and enjoy the great outdoors.

So mark your calendars with these awesome unofficial March holidays and get ready to celebrate the month of March!
