As if applying to college universities wasn’t hard enough, try then picking just one.
If you have never gone through the process of deciding on a university to attend or are thinking about transferring, I say good luck to you.
Maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but it really is a daunting task. There are so many factors to take into account when selecting the place where you’ll be spending so much of your time (and not just for an education).
The school of your choosing will be your home away from home, so it is crucial that you make the right decision for you. While I might be biased as a student of the University of Illinois, I will say this much: to each his own.
The most obvious distinction between schools would be city school life versus college campus towns. There are many reasons why you may choose one over the other and then come to find out that you were completely wrong in everything you thought you wanted in a school.
Transferring is not a bad thing. It just takes some of us longer than others to fully understand different environments when for eighteen years, you might have only lived in one place.
To help distinguish between the two, I’ve assembled a few defining characteristics about each to generally brief those who need to know the realities of both situations.
College Campus Towns:
Campus Towns usually have big lecture halls which might inhibit your learning abilities. If getting one-on-one time with the professor is important to you, you might have to fight off a few others for it.
Living in a college town means one thing: parties and more parties. There’s no denying a good themed party.
Being on a big campus away from home makes it a lot easier to skip class. No one will notice if you’re gone, though your roommate might try to force you to go anyway.
There are a ton of obscure classes available through big campus schools. You might get to try out bowling, billiards, or food culture for some of your general education requirements.
Most college towns don’t have a lot else around. Resources are scarce and you usually have to “make do with what you have.”
The sporting events in college towns are usually a pretty big deal. They are bigger, better and will make you grab onto your seat.
You’ll make some really great friends. Students stick together in college towns.
An always interesting part of college towns are what we call the “townies.” They linger around the university streets and are sometimes a bit … different.
City Schools:
What could be better than exploring the streets of a big city? Your navigation skills will increase immeasurably. You might even start getting a little too confident …
Being in the city will give you valuable, cultural experiences. Who knows, you may end up finding a love for Thai food. Be prepared to drop some diverse and worldly knowledge on all your friends.
Being in a city may provide you with better access to fancy clubs, bumping bars and exciting nights out on the town. It only gets better with age.
Good news! If you’re not much of a social butterfly, you don’t have to see the same people day in and day out. The city is at your disposal to escape when you need to be alone.
Plus, when you see all your friends from home, you’ll be astounded at how good you are at saying “No.” The kids who go campus town schools will be a little too eager to throw a rager. Lucky for you, you know just how to enjoy your time elsewhere.
You’ll get a nice taste of city traffic flow, parking and the things people will do to get where they need to go faster.
The city can be a dangerous place if you aren’t careful. You might feel invincible walking through the city streets like an adult, but you should always take precautions.
Having a great experience is obtainable in both the city and away in a college town. No matter which you choose, make the most of it. You might have to slice bread with a doorstop or live in fear of being eaten by a man on the street, but hey … we’re at least learning something.
